DEGIRO gives you the opportunity to trade on CFDs with an Active or Trader account.

In accordance with European ESMA regulations, if you trade CFDs in your account you will not be able to open positions in other products such as stocks, bonds, or ETFs. Likewise, if you hold positions in other products on your account, you will be unable to trade CFDs. If you wish to trade on CFDs as well as other products, it is possible to open two separate DEGIRO accounts.

The account in which you trade CFDs will be considered dedicated to your CFD trading, in line with the new regulatory requirements. The only difference with respect to the “dedicated” account, is the type of financial instruments in which you will be allow to trade. As it stays a general investment account, all other conditions will remain the same.

If you choose to open an additional account for CFD trading, please mention the username of this new account in the reference field when transferring funds from the nominated bank account. This way, we can ensure that the funds are booked to the correct DEGIRO account.

DEGIRO works with a portfolio based margin model to establish the risk of the entire investment portfolio.

For the calculation of the risk on options DEGIRO uses an option valuation model. This model calculates the value of the options influenced by for instance the underlying value and implied volatility. DEGIRO applies a fixed set of scenarios to a share or option to calculate the risk of a portfolio.

The risk model for options applies to both stock and index options and will make an indication of the risk irrespective of the composition of the portfolio. In this case risk is seen as the amount that DEGIRO holds as its perceived value of mutations that can take place within two trading days.

The risk model takes in account the following features which influence option values:

  • Value of share of underlying

  • Level of implicit volatility

  • Time to maturity

  • Level of dividend

  • Level of interest rates

To establish the risk of a specific option position, the risk model combines the various aforementioned features. A scenario is created where the various features are related with each other.
